I drove into work like every other day and stopped at the entrance of the parking garage. I waved my RFID card for the gate to open and started praying that no cars would come and wait behind mine. This was my routine everyday as the gate sometimes would open immediately and most of the times would not. I would keep the card near the top and hope the reader would pick it up and then change the position and start positioning the card in various places in the front of the car. Sometimes I would roll down the window and wave it outside too. The worst has been when there are cars waiting behind mine and I have had to get down and wave the card in an awkward position in the small space between the gate post and my car. And everyday I pray that does not happen. Today as I was waving the card and the minute I saw another car pull up behind me my heart began to race and i started muttering my ‘please lord, this one time, let the gate open’ prayers. I waved for a couple more minutes and then the worst happened – the car behind me honked. I was feeling helpless and was trying to make a split second decision whether to back up the car or get down and wave the card from the ground. And then a funny thing happened, there was a knock on my side window. I rolled the window down and this gentleman asked me ,'”maam is there a problem with your car”‘ ..I said no…he said “the gate has been open for a while and you haven’t moved so I was wondering if you were having a problem with your car”. I was dumbstruck! I looked at the gate and saw that the gate was indeed open. In my state of preconditioned franticness, I had even failed to realize that the gate had opened probably a while ago. I was blind with my eyes wide open.
How many of us in life are not seeing with our eyes wide open?
We are so lost and strongly holding onto certain beliefs that we fail to see the doors that open in front of us. We fail to see the opportunities that present themselves to us because in our minds, we believe that there is nothing there. We believe miracles are not possible. We believe situations cannot change. We believe people cannot change. Our beliefs blind us to the people, the world and the opportunities around us. Its time to open that inner eye.
